Online accounts awards winners announced

Finance | Gareth Jones | 7 May 2008

The British Library, WaterAid and the Redress Trust were among the winners of the Charities Online Accounts Awards 2008, which was organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and CAF.

The charities chosen were considered to have published the most “friendly and accessible” online financial reports, thereby promoting transparency in the sector, and were selected by a judging panel chaired by Graham Ward CBE, a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers. They each received £5,000.

According to Ward, the judges felt that many charities were simply producing a compliance document, and that too many of the larger charities were simply putting a non-navigable PDF online. However, he said overall the technical level was very high and that many provided “powerful narratives”.

He added that reporting is as important for charities as it is in the commercial world. “Charities depend on donors in the same way that businesses depend on investors and both these communities depend on high quality financial information when making decisions about whether to provide funding. The judges were impressed by the approach taken by so many of the entrants and their desire to make the most of the internet in how they achieve this.”
