Secret Millionaires offer charities free solar panels 10

Finance | Kirsty Weakley | 7 Jun 2011

Green energy company Freetricity has unveiled a £500m fund to install solar panels on the roofs of buildings, and is offering charities access to the first £100m.

The company has partnered with investor LightSource Renewables to offer 800 buildings grants of up to £150,000 to install and maintain solar panels.

As well as reducing carbon emissions the company claims that solar panels can save organisations up to £6,000 per year.

Freetricity is funded through the government’s Feed-in Tariff Scheme (FiT), and is led by Catch 22 trustee Paul Williams and environmentalist Ben Way who met though appearances on Channel 4’s ‘Secret Millionaire’.

However, there will be a review and cap of the FiT scheme next April which Williams said “will reduce the incentives, which may limit our ability to offer this incredible deal”.

Solar panels are offered being offered on a first-come first-served basis to building owners in England and Wales.

Interested charities should sign up at  www.freetricityenergy.com.

I am interested to know more about your work and looking for charities and trusts to partner with us to install solar power panels in 1000 untouchable families homes as a trial basis. At present these untouchable families are having difficulties to without electricity and power supply. Please response to my message. look forward to hear from you.

I run a community organisation in South Wales and sit on the management committee for the local community hall. I am very interested in the scheme and require more information on it so I can inform these and others within the community that could be eligable. This would not only impact on the financial stability but act as a model for those within the community who always ask, "What difference can I make in the big picture" and promote the benefits at local level. Please forward me some more information before we can decide on joining.

We are a UK charity for Brain Injured Children & Young People. We own a holiday home that is made available to affected families and we are considering installing solar panels via the Freetricity scheme. This would seem to offer cost and environmental benefits. Could you send us more details please.

Please can you send through any further information you may have to Brinkworth Parish Council, c/o 6 St. Michael's Close, Brinkworth, Wilts, SN15 5QG. Thank you.

Hi

Our school is very interested in fitting solar panels to its roof and has a large area that could be utilised.

Can you tell me if we are eligible and more details e.g. would the school own the panels and therefore be able to reduce electricity costs and earn money from the feedback tariff?

Thanks

Paul

Response to [Paul Keller]

Our Community Centre is a self financing charity at the heart of the community in north east Bath. Solar panels on our roof would send a message to residents and organisations that reducing fossil fuel usage is important and achievable, while saving money. Please send more information.
