Charities in Twitter storm over balloon releases

Charities are being urged to abandon balloon releases in a Twitter a campaign.
Members of the community umbrella bodies the British Association of Settlements and Social Action Centres (bassac) and the Development Trusts Association have voted to go ahead with a merger.
The two organisations already have a close-knit relationship and have participated in joint policy activities. They have successfully collaborated on programmes such as Communitybuilders and the Safer Homes Fund.
Ben Hughes (pictured), bassac chief executive, said: “We are delighted that our members have voted to support the creation of this exciting new organisation.”
“By consolidating the expertise and resources of both bassac and the DTA’s members and staff we will be in a stronger position to support and speak up for community organisations across the UK.”
The new organisation, which is to be called Locality, is expected to come into operation in April 2011.
