Thirty-three charities have been caught misapplying funds or acting outside their purpose over the last year, according to the Charity Commission.
In a letter tabled in parliament yesterday, Charity Commission chief executive Andrew Hind (pictured) revealed that between 26 November 2008 and 25 November 2009 at least 33 charities were found to be misdirecting charitable funds or operating outside their objects.
Hind was asked to respond to a question put to charities minister Angela Smith by fellow Labour MP Gordon Prentice about how many charities were found to be raising funds for activities outside their charitable purpose.
The Charity Commission, however, does not keep detailed records on the specific issue queried by Prentice.
