More umbrella body chiefs publish expenses

Finance | Tania Mason | 24 Jun 2009

The chief executives of NAVCA, Charity Finance Directors’ Group and the Institute of Fundraising have now joined the NCVO’s Stuart Etherington in providing their total expenses amounts, leaving Acevo as the only major sector umbrella body yet to do so.

CEOs’ expenses at a glance:

2008-2009

In 2008-9, NAVCA chief Kevin Curley claimed £9,088, split between £7,403 for travel and £1,685 subsistence, including accommodation, and misc. In 2007-8, he claimed £9351, split between £6,813 for travel and £2538 for subsistence and miscellaneous.

Curley said he travels to London by train at least once a week from Sheffield. For meetings which begin before 10.30am he usually comes down the previous evening and stays in a hotel.

Company credit card

Lindsay Boswell, chief executive of the Institute of Fundraising, revealed that expenditure in his name for 2008-9 has been £6,079.03. Of this, £592.52 has been reimbursed to him, with the rest charged to a company credit card in his name but used for purchases across the organisation.

Boswell did not supply a figure for 2007-8, explaining that these records are all filed offsite and would “require considerable time and expense to reach”.

He said he will not be publishing his expenses in the Institute’s annual report and accounts this year because they are already prepared “but it would be simple to add them to future years”.

“I have no objection to releasing my expenses details and my trustees will consider me doing so on an ongoing basis to our members, to whom I am accountable,” Boswell added.

CFDG claims 'mostly travel'

CFDG chief executive Keith Hickey said that over the last two years his expenses averaged just under £1,500 a year and were mostly associated with travel around England and Wales attending CFDG events.

“My expenses are authorised by the chair of trustees in line with CFDG’s expenses policy,” Hickey said. CFDG receives very little public money – last year it received just £2,820 from the Income Generation National Support Service.

Last week, Etherington was the first to disclose his expenses, which amounted to £11,997 in 2008-9 and £10,394 the year before.

Acevo still to decide

Acevo chief executive Stephen Bubb has been on sick leave following an operation and only returns to work tomorrow. His deputy, Peter Kyle, said Bubb would decide whether or not to publish his claims once he is back.
