Charities in Twitter storm over balloon releases
24 May 2012
Charities are being urged to abandon balloon releases in a Twitter a campaign.
Volunteering enquiries are continuing to rise with Vodafone Foundation reporting that entries for its World of Difference volunteering programme have doubled since last year.
Over 1,000 people have applied to win one of eight placements where volunteers get a one year paid work placement at a UK registered charity abroad of their choice. The scheme had 487 entries in 2008.
It also appears to be a hit with young, southern women, predominantly from London.
Around 58 per cent of entries to the scheme were women and 60 per cent of applicants were under-30.
Further, 65 per cent of the entries came from southerners, more than half of which were from London.
Round one of the official judging process kicks off this month.
