Nterim managers in the charity sector earn significantly less than their counterparts who work for the private sector, new research suggests.
A snapshot survey of interim managers conducted in December 2008 by interims agency Russam GMS was completed by 46 charity sector people, around 10 per cent of the 400 charity specialists on its books.
The average daily rate for charity interim managers was £464, well below the £612 average – a record high – of all 1,000 respondents. The sector also attracted a high percentage of part-time interims (54 per cent) and women – 35 per cent, against the industry average of around 25 per cent. The average age of charity interims was 54.
Finance professionals were the most common (46 per cent), followed by general management (37 per cent), sales and marketing (17 per cent), HR and IT (4 per cent each) and 13 per cent in other areas.
The survey showed the first overall market slowdown since 2000, with the number of interims on assignment down 11 per cent from an all-time high in activity recorded last June.
