Sector's leading light shines on

Finance | 30 Sep 2008

Bubb’s Blog, the online journal of ubiquitous acevo chief executive Stephen Bubb, never fails to entertain.

He clearly leads a fantastically high-flying lifestyle, and invests a great deal of time furthering the sector’s cause by bending the ears of close Parliamentary pals including Ed Miliband, Phil Hope, Hazel Blears and James Purnell.

Indeed, last week his blog reached a new peak when he met the man at the very top of the greasy pole, none other than prime minister Gordon Brown.

Fortunately, Bubb was not afraid to use irony to make light of this big moment.

Following a brief synopsis of their conversation on the sector, Bubb provides a photo of the encounter, and writes, with tongue firmly jammed into cheek:

“Anyway here is a picture of the leader of the third sector meeting the leader of the country.”

One reader, ‘Janet F’, was so amused she couldn’t leave without posting a comment expressing her enjoyment of the entry.

“I read your blog for a variety of reasons; your views on public service delivery, your thoughts on governance in the sector etc,” she wrote.

“I can now add another reason; humour – ‘leader of the third sector meeting the leader of the country’ - what a hoot! Thanks for brightening my morning!”

But for those of you who joined Janet in enjoying the joke, maybe you should think again. Acevo has 2,000-plus members – that’s more than 1 per cent of UK charities, surely enough to mark out the chief execs’ chief exec as sector head honcho.

Indeed, following last year’s election that never was, this is a mandate for power that Gordon Brown himself would be proud of.

And as this ever-popular blog continues to increase the profile of Bubb and acevo, perhaps it is only a matter of time before Navca, CFDG, the Institute of Fundraising and NCVO are all brought under the wing of their dynamic umbrella-toting counterpart?
