Charities in Twitter storm over balloon releases
24 May 2012
Charities are being urged to abandon balloon releases in a Twitter a campaign.
Birmingham University has won the contract to lead the new £10.25m Third Sector Research Centre.
Birmingham (pictured) will work in partnership with the University of Southampton to deliver the Centre, which aims to strengthen the use of evidence to underpin policy by researching and analysing charities’ effectiveness and impact, strengthening the evidence base on the sector, and enabling better awareness and understanding of its size and dynamics.
The £10.25m is being provided by the Office of the Third Sector, the Economic and Social Research Council, and the Barrow Cadbury Trust.
Two capacity-building ‘clusters’ based at the University of Middlesex and the University of Lincoln will support the Centre’s work by providing opportunities for researchers, student placements in the sector, and a voucher scheme that will allow charities to ‘buy in’ academic expertise.
The Middlesex cluster will focus on social enterprises.
The Centre, which was first announced by Gordon Brown in his first major speech as Prime Minister last July, will be led by Professor Pete Alcock at Birmingham University.
