Charities in Twitter storm over balloon releases

Charities are being urged to abandon balloon releases in a Twitter a campaign.
A senior manager at learning disability charity Enable Scotland has been suspended over a sick joke about missing child Madeleine McCann.
Lynn McBain faces disciplinary action after reportedly referring in a staff newsletter to “McCann oven chips” disappearing from her oven after she left them there for 20 minutes.
The local newsletter produced by staff in Ayrshire also allegedly insulted the family of a woman with learning difficulties, who is a client of the charity.
McBain described the woman’s sisters as “witches” who had come to blows with staff.
The family complained to the charity after they were shown a copy of the booklet.
Enable Scotland refused to confirm the exact contents of the newsletter but has launched a full investigation into the reports. A spokesman said: “We were shocked and appalled by some of the contents that were inappropriate and offensive and totally contrary to the values and ethos of our organisation.
“Our directors and trustees wish to apologise unreservedly to the families concerned for the offensive and unsuitable material in this ‘newsletter’.”
