Acevo has launched a chief executives' inquiry into trust in charities, focusing on their perspectives on public trust, and their role in promoting and preserving the charity brand. The inquiry will incorporate the views of both chief executives and the general public, reporting to acevo's annual conference in December.
Stephen Bubb (pictured) , chief executive of acevo, said that public trust is central to the legitimacy and effectiveness of third sector organisations. "Public trust in the sector is grounded in several myths: that we have no overhead costs, that our staff are unpaid, and that we work in isolation from government. It's time to challenge these outdated views.
Bubb also said charities should stop pretending our administrative costs are non-existent and start explaining why they are necessary. "We need to explain how our closer relationship with government helps us achieve results for our beneficiaries. It's time we put the public trust we enjoy on firmer foundations. Our inquiry will test out chief executives' views on the current situation, and on the need for reform."
The inquiry will be chaired by Sir David Omand, the recently retired Security and Intelligence Coordinator, and is designed to complement and feed into the work of NCVO on accountability and transparency issues within the voluntary sector.
