Calculating volunteer support

A new report has calculated that the value of Victim Support's volunteers' work is roughly equivalent to its annual grant from the Home Office. Based on a detailed study of the work of staff and volunteers in six member charities, Victim Support found that volunteers provided help worth almost Commission to publish information on ex gratia payments Commission to publish information on ex gratia payments £27 million last year.

The report states that the organisation would need a further 1,100 paid staff to provide the same level of work as its 111,000 volunteers. It also estimated that for every £1 the charity spends on supporting and training volunteers, it creates a return of £5 in terms of the value of their work.

The report was produced by Chantrey Vellacott DFK and used recognised ways of calculating the value of volunteer time. The work was funded by the Home Office as part of ongoing work to look atthe value of the public services Victim Support provides.
