Sue Ryder Care is challenging a 15 per cent increase in inspection and registration costs imposed by the Department of Health on its care services, following a 20 per cent rise made only a year ago.
The charity is concerned that on both occasions the costs have been increased without consultation with voluntary providers of care services. It will now have to pay over £11,500 in fees annually, while simultaneously subsidising a shortfall in statutory funding of £7 million each year.
DoH claims that the increase is part of the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) drive to recoup the full cost of its inspection services. Stephen Collinson, director of healthcare at Sue Ryder Care, commented: "The message from government is that voluntary providers of care should pay the full cost of a centrally managed bureaucracy, while at the same time government are not prepared to pay the full cost of the care they commission from us. This is one of a number of inequalities that are preventing the voluntary sector playing a greater role in the delivery of services."
