Acevo achieves charitable status

Finance | Ian Allsop | 1 Jul 2006

The Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations (Acevo) has finally been registered as a charity, after many years of being denied. It has been registered as 'a charity with the objective of working to promote the third sector for the benefit of the public'.

Acevo has been denied charitable status in the past, according to its former chief executive Dorothy Dalton, because "it provided legal and advice and support, which is something a professional body would do, and Acevo also only provided courses for its members, not every chief executive".

The Charity Commission recognised the promotion of the voluntary sector as a charitable purpose in its own right back in 2004, but because Acevo was going through a period of considerable change around then, it has taken some time for it to apply and be registered, according to David Hunter, policy and development officer at Acevo.

Hunter says that being a charity will give the organisation greater credibility as its function will mirror that of its members. "Most people thought we were a charity already. The main driver behind this is the fact that most of our members are charities and as their professional body, it is the appropriate legal form for us to take."

Stephen Bubb (pictured), chief executive at Acevo, added: "Chief executives have a key role to play in setting and maintaining a high standard of leadership and professionalism, and in promoting a modern, enterprising third sector. Better leadership means better results for the people we serve."
