Communications charity Media Trust has today announced the appointment of Su-Mei Thompson as its new chief executive.

Thompson will take up her new role in September of this year, replacing Caroline Diehl who had run the charity's founding chief executive. Diehl, who announced her departure in September last year, stepped down from the charity in February 2017 but confirmed she would stay on as a patron.

Frances Lang, the chief operating officer of the Media Trust, will serve as the organisation’s interim chief executive.

Thompson will join the organisation from The Women’s Foundation, a Hong Kong-based NGO dedicated to the advancement of women and girls, where she has been chief executive for the last eight years.

Prior to that, Thompson held senior management positions at The Walt Disney Company, the Financial Times and Christie’s in Asia.

She will join the Media Trust with a brief to “drive a five-year growth strategy to scale up media volunteer engagement”.

Speaking about her appointment, Thompson said: “I feel very privileged to have been invited by Media Trust to build on the strong foundations established by founder and former chief executive, Caroline Diehl, the board of trustees and its staff over the last 23 years.

“I believe there is tremendous potential to expand Media Trust’s network and sphere of influence, leveraging talent and resources from the media industry to empower even more charities and marginalised communities to get their story across and have a voice.”
