Sir Mark Walport was appointed director of the Wellcome Trust in 2003. He left the charity in March 2013 to become the government's chief scientific adviser. Prior to this he was professor of medicine and head of the division of medicine at Imperial College London. He is a member of several government bodies including the Prime Minister’s Council for Science and Technology, and the UK India Round Table.
He has also undertaken independent reviews for the UK Government on the use and sharing of personal information in the public and private sectors, 'Data Sharing Review' (2009) and secondary education, 'Science and Mathematics: Secondary Education for the 21st Century' (2010).
In 2009 he received a knighthood in the New Year’s Honour’s List for his services to medical research.
