Ho ho ho, it is the last day of news at Civil Society Towers until 2026 and to celebrate, Diary sat down for one final no-holds-barred interview with a brave sector leader.
As charities like PETA and WaterAid prepare for Christmas with their dystopian dinner fantasies, Diary had a nice festive chat with children’s charity leader Rita Waters.
The National Youth Advocacy Service (NYAS) boss shared her favourite festive films, dream dinner guests and an excellent choice for best Christmas song. Read our conversation below.
As someone from the Wirral, is it as posh as everyone in Liverpool says?
“Absolutely darling!”
What is the Wirral’s greatest export – underwater rail or Paul Hollywood?
“Definitely Paul Hollywood. Who doesn’t love a bit of cake and those blue eyes... Don’t get me started!”
As CEO of a children’s charity, do you believe in Santa Claus?
“I certainly believe in the magic and spirit of Christmas. It brings out the best in people – even though it’s also one of the most stressful times of the year, and for some, the loneliest. It’s about families, friends and being together but sadly that’s not always possible for children in care and care leavers which is why the support that NYAS provides is such a vital lifeline – especially at Christmas.”
What do you think Santa gets up to on the other 364 nights of the year?
“Hopefully recovering – and then back in the workshop. Making that many presents doesn’t happen overnight.”
If you could invite one celebrity round for Christmas dinner, who would it be?
“Probably Jamie Oliver – he’s quietly supported care leavers for years, and if you’re going to talk children’s rights over dinner, it helps if the food’s good. He can cook, I’ll do the washing up!”
When is the correct time to open presents at Christmas?
“When everyone’s together to share the joy of giving.”
Which Christmas film have you watched the most times?
“Two: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – watched it every year since I was a child – the young persons James Bond! And It’s a Wonderful Life – a proper tradition in our house and must be watched in the cinema on Christmas Eve to get the whole experience. Who doesn’t need a guardian angel in their lives? Good old Clarence – still makes me cry every time!”
What’s the best Christmas song?
“Dominick the Donkey – YouTube it – You’re welcome!”
Jing-a-di-jing to you too. Mince pies or Brussels sprouts?
“Mince pies – all year round if possible.”
Do you wish it could be Christmas every day?
“Absolutely not, I’d be completely broke!”
What do you call the time between Christmas and New Year?
“The ‘I’m-going-to-do-it-but-never-did’ period. Every year I plan to sort the house, the garden, my inbox, my wardrobe and lots of other stuff – and somehow none of it happens. I’m convinced the Grinch steals the time!”
What’s your favourite New Year’s Eve tipple?
“A glass – or three – of something bubbly to round off the year and welcome in the next. There’s always lots to look forward to at NYAS, especially planning how we continue to support children in care and care leavers.”
