William Shawcross has urged charities to “live their values” and have “respect for their donors and for the public”, in his last appearance as chair of the Charity Commission.

Shawcross, who completes his term as chair next week, was speaking at the regulator’s annual public meeting yesterday

His concluding message for the sector was that “charities which live their values, and demonstrate the greatest possible impact for their beneficiaries, and respect for their donors and for the public” are “vital”.

He added that: “I believe, the work of a strong Commission that regulates with purpose and intelligence, is so necessary too.”

Shawcross described charities as “among the greatest of our national assets”.

“They are part of what makes us distinct as a nation, and what brings us together as citizens.”

He said he had found his time at the regulator very rewarding and that the “sheer idiosyncrasy of charity has never ceased to delight me”.
