Virgin Money invites charities to apply for 2020 London Marathon

Virgin Money has announced it has opened invitations for charities to apply to be the official partner for the 2020 London Marathon.

Applications for charities opened yesterday, with Virgin Money saying it was inviting charities to apply now in order to “celebrate the 40th London Marathon” and also the organisation’s “10th year of sponsorship” of the event.

The chosen charity will be the official charity partner of the 2020 London Marathon but will also be Virgin Money’s corporate charity for 2019/20. Charities have until 9 February to apply.

In a statement released yesterday, Virgin Money said it was looking for applications from an organisation “that has, or is looking to launch, a project or programme that encourages, supports and develops people’s engagement in sport, or which uses sport to make a difference in the world and where being the Virgin Money London Marathon Charity of the Year will make all the difference.”

Virgin named the Teenage Cancer Trust as its 2018 London Marathon charity partner. The trust said it was aiming to raise £1.5m for young people with cancer across the UK from the event. The official charity partner for the 2019 event has yet to be named.

In 2017, the Royal Foundation’s Heads Together Campaign, a mental health charity led by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry was the official charity partner.

Hugh Brasher, event director for London Marathon Events, said: “I am delighted that Virgin Money has chosen ‘sport’ to be the beneficiary of the 40th running of the London Marathon.

“Our co-founders, my father Chris Brasher and John Disley, were huge advocates of the power of sport in transforming lives for the better. They passionately believed that sport teaches everyone so much about important life values such as competition, integrity, hard work and teamwork.

“In recent years, it has been shown that sport - and particularly running - has powerful benefits to mental health and well-being.”
