Online giving in the UK increased by 18.5 per cent in 2017 and overall giving increased by 2.9 per cent, according to data published last week.

The Blackbaud Institute has published its 2017 Charitable Giving Report, which analyses overall, mobile and online giving trends from across its clients based in the United States of America, Canada and the UK.

According to the report overall giving in 2017 grew 4.1 per cent in all countries, based on analysis of data from 8,453 charities and nonprofits. Online giving across Blackbaud’s clients grew by 12.1 per cent and saw what it called “a double-digit growth rate” return for charities of all sizes.

Based on data from 359 UK-based organisations “with over $889,000 (£636,000) in charitable giving”, Blackbaud said that online giving increased by 18.5 per cent in 2017. In 2016, Blackbaud said digital giving had risen by just 2.2 per cent.

The data showed that December “remains the largest giving month of the year”, while June is the “second largest giving month of the year”.

Blackbaud said that for #givingtuesday 2017 online giving increased 28 per cent based on the previous year and that 26 per cent of digital donations were made on mobile devices.

The company, which is based in South Carolina in the United States, announced in early October 2017 that it had completed the purchase of UK-based digital giving platform JustGiving for £95m.

Editor's note: This column has been amended to show the report was produced by Blackbaud Institute and that the company is based in South Carolina, not Maryland as originally printed.
