Former Masterchef semi-finalist Matthew Campbell has died after he collapsed during yesterday’s London Marathon and donations have for the charity he was raising money for have since flooded in.

Professional chef Matthew Campbell, 29, “collapsed at the 22.5 mile mark” of yesterday’s London Marathon and “died later in hospital”, according to a statement from the organisers.

He was running the race for The Brathay Trust in honour of his father Martin Campbell, who had recently passed away. He set up a JustGiving fundraising page to raise money for the event which, at the time of publishing, has now raised over £15,000 for the charity, around £13,000 of which was donated after his death was announced.

Campbell had also been a contestant on the most recent series of Masterchef: The Professionals on the BBC, where he reached the semi-finals in December 2017.

Matthew Campbell had previously completed the ASICS Greather Manchester Marathon on 8 April 2018.

In a statement The Brathay Trust, said: "We are devastated by the news of the death of Matt Campbell, who was participating in the 2018 Virgin Money London Marathon yesterday whilst raising funds for Brathay Trust.

"Matt and his family have been tireless in supporting the work of Brathay Trust and our thoughts and prayers are with them at this terrible time.

"Cumbrian born Matt, 29 and a professional chef, collapsed and died despite receiving immediate medical treatment. He was a well-known chef who featured in Masterchef: The Professionals last year, showcasing his innovative and inspirational food thinking.

"Matt became involved with Brathay Trust through his father Martin, who was a key member of the team delivering the Brathay 10in10 (10 marathons in 10 days) until his untimely death in the summer of 2016."

In a tweet from the charity's main Twitter account, Brathay Trust called the news "sad" and promised "a tribute to follow".

A spokesperson for Masterchef said: "We are shocked and saddened to hear the news about Matt Campbell, one of our talented contestants from last year. It was a privilege to have him on the show.

"He will always be remembered for producing some of the most innovative and ground-breaking food that we saw on the series. From the whole Masterchef team, our sincere condolences and thoughts are with his family and friends."

The statement from the Virgin London Marathon organisers said: "Everyone involved in the organisation of the London Marathon would like to express our sincere condolences to Matt’s family and friends.

"No further details will be released and the family has asked for privacy. The exact cause of death will be established by later medical examination."
