Marie Stopes International has restructured its senior executive team and appointed its first chief operating officer and launched a new exernal affairs division.
Marjorie Newman-Williams joined the charity in 2016 as vice-president of international operations and will now to head up the external affairs division. Part of her role will be to find new sources of funding to fill the gaps created by the reintroduction of the US President Donald Trump’s Global Gag Rule in February, also called the Mexico City Policy, banning funding to organisations offering abortion services.
The charity has estimated this gap to be worth $30m (£23m) in its latest accounts and last year the charity received £23.8m from the United States Agency for International Aid, which administers foreign aid on behalf of the US government.
The charity has appointed Megan Elliott as chief operating officer, Elliott joined the charity in 2013 and was previously the charity’s vice president for strategy and development. She will be responsible for overseeing programme design, management and delivery.
In a statement the charity said: “We believe that this move will provide greater support for our country programmes and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of our work.”
The charity is also in the process of creating a social marketing team, and is recruiting for a manager to lead up the team.
It says the social marketing managing director will report to the charity’s vice-president for technical services, Helen Blackholly.
“We believe we can do more to maximise choice and to ensure greater access to contraception and medical abortion through our social marketing channels,” the charity’s statement reads.
A spokesman for the charity said no redundancies had been made and the restructure was not expected to cause an increase in costs.
