Amnesty International began its global letter writing marathon in 2001, with a small group of activists in Poland writing letters for ten days for the release of 12 individuals. This grew into a world-wide campaign and in 2012, 1.5 million letters were drafted for Amnesty International's Write for Rights week. Amnesty highlights a few of the cases supported and calls for continued action.
