The Chartered Institute of Fundraising publishes wellbeing resource

The Chartered Institute of Fundraising has published a new wellbeing and fundraising resource.

It is designed to help fundraisers look after their own and their colleagues’ wellbeing during all times, but particularly during difficult periods of prolonged pressure and stress.

Fundraisers can be faced with a number of issues, especially in the run-up to a launch of a public appeal that has been months in preparation.

They are often also close to causes and beneficiaries, which can be triggering, and may face pressure to hit targets.

The Chartered Institute of Fundraising states that there is no one solution, the sector must aim for a whole approach supporting fundraisers in an inclusive way.

The infrastructure body believes “a behavioural and cultural response is needed, not a quick fix”.

It adds: “A burnt-out workforce is one that isn’t sustainable – our causes and beneficiaries need to be able to rely on the income and work of our fundraisers for the longer-term. Looking after and supporting the wellbeing of fundraisers is crucial to delivering your charitable mission.”

Research conducted by Claire Warner, which received responses from 700 fundraisers, showed that less than a third, 30%, agreed that “my organisation has a great health and wellbeing culture” and cited poor management and leadership leading to high turnover.

This research was carried out before the Covid-19 pandemic and shows that the issues raised are prevalent in ‘business as normal’ times.

The Chartered Institute of Fundraising suggests issues are therefore likely to be more embedded within the culture and behaviours of organisations.

The resource covers wellbeing and Covid-19, planning to manage pressure and issues impacting the wellbeing of fundraisers, among other points.
