Fundraising platform the Big Give has raised over £70,000 so far for the Syrian crisis.

The Big Give offered to double online donations to the emergency appeals by the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), Merlin and others. This match funding has now been "exhausted", the organisation advised, but "a generous donor" is continuing to double donations to the DEC and Merlin appeals. The organisation speculates that other charities may find similar support over the next few days.

Over £29,000 has been raised so far by the DEC appeal, which launched this week. Including gift aid the grand total across 11 emergency Syria appeals stands at over £70,000.

Helen Cable, managing director of the Big Give, said: “The charities taking part in the Big Give Syria Emergency Appeal are doing all they can to support those most in need and we are delighted to see such a fantastic response from the public, which will enable the charities involved to provide even more vital support.”

The full list of charities with Syria appeals supported by the Big Give's is: Cafod; DEC; International Rescue Committee; MapAction; Medair; Merlin; Oxfam; Save the Children; Tearfund; War Child; and World Vision.

BT’s commission-free online fundraising platform MyDonate is also supporting the Syria appeal.
