A record six charities have made the grade for Stonewall’s top-100 list of gay-friendly employers, with homelessness charity St Mungo’s just missing out on the top ten.
Last year only three charities made Stonewall’s list – St Mungo’s, Citizens Advice and Victim Support. All these charities are in the list this year, joined by Action for Children, the Tate Gallery and Touchstone.
St Mungo’s has climbed 14 places since last year, ranking at number 11 compared to 24th- equal last year.
A glaring omission from the list is crime prevention charity Nacro. It was the top-ranking charity in the annual list for five years up until 2010 - ever since it launched, in fact - and in 2008 was number one in the entire index of all employers.
It disappeared from the list last year, having been the highest scoring-charity at number 33 in 2012.
Overall, housing sector firm Gentoo has topped Stonewall’s 2014 list of gay-friendly employers. Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust and the Co-operative complete the top three.
Full results of the Stonewall Top Employers 2014: The Workplace Equality Index will be announced at a ceremony hosted tonight by Tate Britain, the first museum to appear in the Top 100 gay-friendly employers.
Ben Summerskill, Stonewall chief executive said: "Gentoo and every single employer in the Top 100 has performed remarkably this year as competition for a place on the list of gay-friendly employers has never been fiercer. This commitment from organisations - across 38 different industries - is changing the face of workplaces for the better for all staff - regardless of their sexual orientation."
The Top 100 list is based on the results of Stonewall’s Workplace Equality 2014, the tenth published by the charity. The Index is based on a range of key indicators which include a confidential questionnaire of lesbian, gay and bisexual staff, with over 9,700 participants. This consistently revealed that employees from organisations ranked in Stonewall’s Top 100 exhibited higher levels of staff satisfaction and loyalty.
