The Charity Commission for Northern Ireland is talking to the trustees of a Belfast-based charity after reports of IRA chants at its flagship event.

Video footage posted online from Sunday’s finale of the Féile an Phobail festival appeared to show thousands of young people singing “up the Ra” during a performance by Dublin band the Wolfe Tones, according to local news reports.

The festival is organised by Féile An Phobail Limited, a registered charity with an income of £1.7m, to which the regulator is now speaking.

A spokesperson for the regulator said: “The Charity Commission for Northern Ireland is aware of the headlines regarding the charity, Féile An Phobail Limited, and can confirm that it is following up with the charity trustees on the issues which have been raised.”

Féile An Phobail Limited has not responded to Civil Society News’ requests for comment.
