The British Psychological Society (BPS) has sold its head office in Leicester after a prior attempt fell through.
BPS announced this week that it had exchanged contracts with a buyer and said it would leave the four-storey premises within six months.
The charity said that post-pandemic changes to working patterns, including a move to remote shifts, motivated the decision to sell its head office.
According to its listing on estate agents Andrew and Ashwell, the property was on the market for £2.5m, although the charity has not confirmed the final sale price.
In its statement, the charity said: “Our intention is to move to a smaller base at an alternative location in Leicester that is more appropriate for the post-pandemic level of use by our staff.”
In its most recent accounts for 2024, an average of 95 people were employed at BPS’s Leicester head office full-time, with a further 13 working there part-time.
BPS's income that year was £13.4m, marginally above its spending of £16.7m.
Second attempt to sell
BPS’s main Leicester and London offices, where fewer staff are based, previously closed due to the Covid pandemic.
“We adapted swiftly to the changing landscape and seized opportunities to ensure that work continued apace,” the charity wrote in its 2020 trustees' report.
BPS started looking to relocate in August 2025 after finding that staff and member occupancy of the Leicester office was low and its facilities underused.
It announced that offers had been received a month later, one of which its trustees accepted on 19 September.
This offer, however, fell through due to “difficulties proceeding with the purchase” so BPS chose an alternative buyer in February this year.
In its most recent statement, the charity said: “We will continue to support our staff as this process moves forward and will provide updates and timelines in due course.”
As of September 2025, the charity said that there were no current plans to change the use of its London office in Tabernacle Street, Shoreditch.
