Philanthropy charity the Beacon Collaborative will merge into New Philanthropy Capital (NPC), the organisations have announced today.

The organisations said the merger, which will see Beacon coming under the NPC brand, is part of an effort to increase the amount and effectiveness of philanthropy in the UK.

Beacon was set up in 2018 to advocate for and grow philanthropy in the UK, and the merger came after the completion of its initial five-year programme to catalyse growth in philanthropy across the country.

Cath Dovey, co-founder of Beacon, will work with NPC as an associate to continue her organisation’s mission and integrate its activities within the think tank.

Beacon had one part-time administration staff member who will not be transferring to NPC, while no NPC roles are being cut as a result of the merger.

The Beacon board is winding down the organisation, with no trustees joining NPC.

NPC recorded a £3.1m total income for the financial year ending June 2024, while Beacon had a total income of £527,000 for the year to March 2024.

Strengthening the impact community

NPC chief executive Jonathan Simmons said: “We’re excited to be bringing Beacon’s incredible convening and advocacy power together with NPC’s deep knowledge of the UK impact sector.

“Together we can focus on helping strengthen the UK’s vibrant and growing impact community.”

Dovey said: “Since 2019, Beacon has been successful in drawing together organisations that support, promote and celebrate philanthropy.

“Through collaborative working, we have achieved our mission to put the work of the UK’s philanthropy sector on the map for philanthropists, policymakers and the wider impact community.

“Our sector has a clear plan to drive growth in philanthropy and giving. I am delighted to be working with NPC to build the capacity and capability to turn that plan into action.”
