International children’s charity Plan UK is today encouraging the public to help celebrate Day of The Girl 2013 and get involved in erasing the barriers to girls' education.

As part of Plan UK's campaign Because I'm a Girl, a new video highlights some of the barriers girls face in their local communities and what can happen when you remove them.

Globally 65 million girls are not in school. The video focuses on girls who choose to stay in education, and the impact that this can have on their careers, home lives and relationships. The cleverly-animated video is accompanied with a backdrop of vox pops with the general public. The first question, which contains something of a shock factor, is to ask a young girl whether she likes being a girl or would rather be a boy. As the film develops, Plan asks people what career path they would like to choose. Women and men share their striking experiences, thoughts and opinions on girl’s rights covering education, sex, relationships, early/forced child marriage and hunger.

Plan UK will be tweeting activity @PlanUK and using #DayOfTheGirl.  More information about the campaign is available on the Day of the Girl website.

Every Friday civilsociety.co.uk features an innovative or effective use of film by a charity. If you would like to draw our attention to your charity's film, or even someone else's please email [email protected]
