What better reason to adopt the latest YouTube fad than a show of support for a wronged peer? We can't find one, and we doubt you can either. Feast your eyes on Anish Kapoor and friends doing it 'Gangnam-style' for fellow artist Ai Weiwei.
It may serve as uncomfortable viewing, or it may have you rolling on the floor (in a similar style to Kapoor at the start of the video) with laughter. But whatever your reaction, the Gangnam for Freedom with Anish Kapoor and friends has a serious message: freedom of speech.
Ai Weiwei, an artist renowned not just for his works, but for his imprisonment as a result of their politically-charged works, recently had a similar video removed from the web in China. Ai Weiwei’s parody of rapper PSY’s popular music film used handcuffs to comment on the lack of freedom in China. The film was immediately removed from the web by the Chinese authorities.
Kapoor's film, which is made in support of Ai Weiwei and others facing repression of expression, has won its own support from various human rights organisations, among them, Amnesty, Liberty, Index on Censorship and the Helen Bamber Foundation.
Every Friday civilsociety.co.uk features an innovative use of film by a charity. If you would like to draw our attention to your charity's film, or even someone else's please email [email protected].
