Wedding bells to chime for Rosamund and Stuart

We all know that ‘charity’ comes from the word ‘caritas’, and that caritas means love, but it seems there are some in the sector who have taken this quite literally.

Sir Stuart Etherington and fiance Rosamund McCarthy

We all know that ‘charity’ comes from the word ‘caritas’, and that caritas means love, but it seems there are some in the sector who have taken this quite literally.

Civilsociety.co.uk is delighted to announce the engagement of leading Bates Wells & Braithwaite charity lawyer Rosamund McCarthy to Sir Stuart Etherington, chief executive of umbrella body NCVO.

The couple, who have been together for five years, will marry next year in a Quaker ceremony, as McCarthy is a Quaker. Such ceremonies are unprogrammed and held in silence, without a priest or vicar, and any guest who is moved can stand up and minister their thoughts, feelings and blessings.

McCarthy insists it was not a leap-year proposal, nor was there any definitive moment on bended knee.  “It just sort of evolved,” she said, “into a very heartfelt conclusion.”

Etherington added: "I am so happy to be marrying Rosamund after my many years as a bachelor. I am looking forward to spending our lives together - and a good reception!"

All that remains now is to coin a Hollywood-style name for the couple, a la Brangelina.  Stuamund? Rosamington?
