WaterAid is today hosting a 24-hour tweetathon to raise awareness and give a behind-the-scenes look at the charity's work around the world.

Using the hashtag #wateraid24 the Australian office kicked off the tweeting at midnight BST and by midnight tonight the charity expects at least 20 of the 26 countries, where WaterAid is working, to take part.

The charity was inspired by Greater Manchester Police and Walsall Council’s use of Twitter to show what a typical day was like and claims to be the first international charity to use the social networking site to hold a tweetathon.

WaterAid’s website manager Joe Downie said: “In this age of transparency, we want to show the breadth and depth not only of our work to deliver safe water, sanitation and hygiene to some of the world’s poorest communities but also communicate some of the many complexities behind development.”

Tweets so far have included the India team's meeting with the former chief engineer of Public Health engineering, the UK team’s preparation’s for Thursday’s launch of a corporate partnership with Rubbermaid Commercial Products and the Rwanda team’s work on the Clean and Green Environment campaign.

The charity is also tweeting pictures and videos as well as replying to other users’ comments.
