Rob Wilson and Lisa Nandy among charity sector figures to keep seats

Both Rob Wilson, who served as minister for civil society prior to the election, and Lisa Nandy, who was the shadow minister, have kept their seats in the general election, while the Conservatives have secured a majority win.

Both Rob Wilson, who served as minister for civil society prior to the election, and Lisa Nandy, who was the shadow minister, have kept their seats in the general election, while the Conservatives have secured a majority win.

Nandy got 52 per cent of the vote to keep her seat as Labour MP for Wigan, while Wilson (pictured) got 46 per cent, allowing him to hold on to his seat as Conservative MP for Reading East.

It is unknown who will take on the role of minister for civil society until the Prime Minister makes the announcement once a government has been formed.

Nick Hurd, who held the role of minister for civil society until July 2014, will remain as MP for Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner, having secured 60 per cent of the vote.

Other figures who have been outspoken in the sector who have held on to their seats include: Stella Creasy, Labour MP for Walthamstow; Charlie Elphicke, Conservative MP for Dover and Deal; Bernard Jenkin, Conservative MP for Harwich and North Essex; Robert Halfon, Conservative MP for Harlow, and Gareth Thomas, former shadow charities minister and MP for Harrow West.

Priti Patel, who held the role of Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury with the responsibility for charities, the voluntary sector and gift aid at the end of the last government, has also been reappointed as the Conservative MP for Witham, having secured 58 per cent of the vote.

Newly appointed MPs

NCVO has published a list of newly appointed MPs with ties to the voluntary sector. It includes:

Peter Kyle, Labour MP for Hove, the former deputy chief executive of Acevo.

Jo Cox, Labour MP for Batley and Spen, has previously held public policy roles at Oxfam, Save the Children and the NSPCC

Suella Fernandes, Conservative MP for Fareham, the co-founder and former chair of the Africa Justice Foundation.

Nusrat Ghani, Conservative MP for Wealdon, who has health roles at a number of health charities.

Tulip Siddiq, Labour MP for Hampstead and Kilburn, who previously worked as a press officer at Amnesty International.

Ruth Smeeth, Labour MP for Stoke, who is currently the deputy director of Hope not Hate. 

Wes Streeting, Labour MP for Ilford North, a former chief executive of the Helena Kennedy Foundation and a former president of the National Union of Students.

Lieutenant Thomas Tugendhat, Conservative MP for Tonbridge and Malling, who established the Armed Forces Muslim Association

Anna Turley, Labour MP for Redcar, who was former deputy director at the New Local Government network.
