Eliot Lyne, interim chief executive at RNIB

RNIB has appointed former finance director Eliot Lyne as interim chief executive after Sally Harvey resigned last month.

Harvey quit after the Charity Commission and Ofsted launched investigations into the charity over safeguarding concerns at a children's home.

Lyne, who initially joined the charity as interim finance director in 2016, was appointed as interim chief executive on 10 April.

Prior to joining the charity, he worked in roles with Amnesty International UK, Community Action Suffolk, Scope, Greenpeace, Essex Cares, Livability, SeeAbility, BBC World Service Trust, HelpAge International, Merlin, Samaritans, TK Maxx, and Deloitte & Touche.

RNIB is now beginning a recruitment process for a permanent chief executive.

Investigation

Harvey had only been RNIB’s permanent chief executive since October 2017. She was the charity’s acting chief executive for a year before that.

On 13 March, Ofsted gave the sight-loss charity notice of intended action after serious concerns emerged about the Pears Centre for Specialist Learning in Coventry. The centre is a residential setting for children and young people, run by RNIB's subsidiary called RNIB Charity.

The charity was told by Ofsted to demonstrate major improvements by mid-April, with the regulator making a decision by mid-May.

After receiving Ofsted’s notice, the board had discussions with Harvey and she subsequently chose to resign.

On 29 March, the Charity Commission opened its own statutory inquiry, with an interim report expected to be published in May.
