Report: The future of civil society

Action is needed to stop the sector becoming weaker and more fragmented, Welsh infrastructure body WCVA has warned, after conducting research into the future of charity over the next 20 years.

The body has produced two Shape Your Future reports which look at the future trends and map some potential scenarios for the sector. The reports highlight several sources of concern, including the levels and sources of funding, and the level of engagement with issues.

WCVA, working with 19 county voluntary councils in Wales, commissioned the research to help the sector plan strategically for the challenges ahead. WCVA is the national membership body for the third sector in Wales and CVCs support the sector at local and regional levels across Wales.

Peter Davies, chair of WCVA, said: “The future wellbeing of our communities will be dependent on our ability to take early action to prepare for these changes, to build resilience for the long term through community-led action.

“We need to become a society that prevents problems from occurring rather than one that - as now - copes with the consequences.”

Richard Edwards, chair of the Wales Association of Voluntary Councils, added: “It’s clear that if the sector is to play its full role in improving wellbeing over the longer term, we will need to work closely with partners across all sectors.”
