Homelessness charity Depaul UK has appointed Paul McKenzie as its new executive director of fundraising and communications.

McKenzie, who is currently head of philanthropy and partnerships at Battersea, is set to take up his new post with Depaul UK on 2 January 2019. He has worked at Battersea for over four years and, in that time, helped grow the organisation’s major gifts and corporate partnerships income from £666,000 to £3m, and built up a 17-strong team.

He has worked in the fundraising sector for over 14 years and, prior to joining Battersea, worked for Age UK and Action for Children.

McKenzie said his passion for “solving the issue of homelessness” was the reason why he decided to join Depaul UK.

“Since my first roles in the charity sector as a support worker for refugees and then homeless adults, I have been determined to be part of solving the issue of homelessness," he said.

“Throughout my 14 years in fundraising, I have always gravitated back towards the homelessness issue and how I could raise money to enable real change for those who many forget.”

McKenzie is the second senior fundraiser to leave Battersea since the summer. Liz Tait, the former director of fundraising at the charity, announced she would be leaving in August and took up her new role as director of fundraising at the Teenage Cancer Trust a few weeks ago.

She had been director of fundraising at Battersea for nearly eight years and the charity are currently in the process of recruiting for her replacement.

Speaking about McKenzie’s appointment, Mike Thiedke, chief executive of Depaul UK, said: “Paul has an impressive track record of fundraising in the charitable sector, has led multi-disciplinary teams, developed and managed growth strategies and has applied a ‘can-do’, more-and-better approach to everything he does.

“He will lead cross-functional innovation specifically focusing on how fundraising, service/programme, finance and communications work together to maximise opportunity and outcome.”

McKenzie said: “I have been a huge admirer of the work of Depaul UK and what the fundraising and communications team has achieved in the past four years.

“I am really excited about being part of Depaul UK’s future and working with everyone at the charity to ensure we do everything we can to empower the thousands of young people who face homelessness every year.”
