Our weekly summary of the latest movers in the charity sector.

Chief executive

Depaul UK has announced the appointment of Mike Thiedke as its new chief executive.

Thiedke will join the homelessness charity on 1 May from Plan International UK, where he is currently director of public engagement.

Prior to that, he was international head of child sponsorship and supporter care at ActionAid International, and spent five years working with the United Nations.

Anna Fowlie has been appointed as the new chief executive of the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations.

Fowlie replaces Martin Sime in the role, after he retired in December last year after a quarter of a decade with the organisation.

She is due to take up her new role in April from the Scottish Social Services Council, of which Fowlie has been chief executive since 2009.

Sarah Brennan, the current chief executive of mental health charity YoungMinds, has announced she will be stepping down from her role with the organisation in May this year.

Brennan has lead the charity since 2007 and in that time YoungMinds’ income has more than tripled in size. It has also been a charity partner in the Heads Together campaign and hosted visits by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Prime Minister.

She was also awarded an OBE in the 2017 New Year’s Honours list for services to children and young people.

Finance and strategy

London-based ‘peacebuilding’ charity Conciliation Resource has announced the dual appointments of Tim Hansen as its chief operating officer and Kathryn Tomlinson as new director of programmes.

Hansen is a solicitor and has worked with various charities including the British Red Cross and Reprieve since 2014. He is currently chair of refugee charity which he himself co-founded in 2015.

Tomlinson joins from BBC Media Action, where she was regional director for Asia for the last five and a half years.

Non executive

Marie Stopes International has appointed Suzanna Taverne as the new chair of its board of trustees.

Taverne brings “a wealth of experience from across a range of sectors” to the role, according to Marie Stopes. She has worked as finance director at the Independent, director of strategy at education publishing company Pearson and was managing director at the British Library.

She has also held numerous charity board roles, including with Age UK, The Design Museum and was previously chair of Gingerbread. She also recently stepped down as a trustee of the BBC.

The government has announced that current Conservative peer Baroness Stowell is the preferred candidate to be the next chair of the Charity Commission.

A pre-appointment hearing for Stowell will take place on 20 February. If appointed to the role, she will resign her party membership and the Conservative whip in the House of Lords and become an independent peer.

Baroness Stowell of Beeston was Leader of the House of Lords and the Lord Privy Seal until July 2016. Her entry on the register of members interests at the House of Lords says she is a trustee of Crimestoppers and of an education charity the Transformation Trust.

English Heritage has announced the appointment of two new trustees to its board, saying both new appointees have “a history of championing diversity and ethnic minorities”.

The two new trustees are Kunle Olulode and David Olusoga. Olulode is the director of Voice4Change, a national advocate for the Black and Minority Ethnic voluntary sector. Olusoga is a historian, broadcaster and filmmaker.

Sir Tim Laurence, chair of English Heritage, said: “I am delighted to welcome both David and Kunle as Trustees to English Heritage. Together they will play a key role in helping us to bring England's diverse history to life for our visitors and members.”

The Scottish Fundraising Standards Panel has announced the appointment of four new members.

The incoming panel members are: John Downie, director of public affairs at SCVO; Matthew Middler, a fundraiser at the Royal Caledonian Education Trust; Katie Bruce, area fundraiser for West Scotland at MS Society and Kirsty Connell-Skinner, development manager at University of Strathclyde.
