Macmillan Coffee Morning raises record £29.5m

Macmillan Cancer Support’s flagship fundraising event, the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, has raised a record-breaking £29.5m last year.

The event, which took place on 30 September 2016, raised £1.9m more than it did in 2015, bringing the total amount raised to £29.5m. The event has now raised £190m since it began in 1991.

Macmillan said that #CoffeeMorning trended on Twitter throughout the day of the event, and that the event was mentioned on social media over 61,000 times in the preceding week.

Richard Taylor, the interim director of fundraising, marketing and communications at Macmillan, said: “I’d like to thank every single one of our wonderful coffee morning hosts and guests who took part in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning last year. There are 2.5 million people living with cancer in the UK and that number is only set to rise. This shows that the need to support people affected by cancer is growing, and getting together to fundraise by holding a World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is more important than ever.

“We simply couldn’t do the work we do – from funding specialist nurses, to staffing our support line and providing cancer information – without the generous support of our fundraisers. Every cake baked and every coffee sold at a World’s Biggest Coffee Morning plays a huge part in raising the vital funds needed to help us ensure no one faces cancer alone.”

In 2015, Macmillan sought to rebrand its flagship fundraising event in order to make it more appealing to a younger demographic, and to see off the threat of “copy-cat” campaigns from other charitable organisations.

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning 2017 will take place on 29 September.
