Macmillan’s flagship fundraising event, the World's Biggest Coffee Morning, has beaten its previous year’s record by £5m, raising £25m for people affected by cancer.

The event, which in 2014 took place on Friday 26 September, has now raised £139m since the first official coffee morning took place in 1991 - when it saw 2,600 supporters raise £208,000 for the charity. Last year’s event had 200,000 registered hosts.

Simon Phillips, director of fundraising at Macmillan, said he was "delighted" by the figure.

"It’s a remarkable achievement and I would like to thank all of our wonderful coffee morning hosts and guests who made this possible. The money raised will help fund the valuable Macmillan services and professionals who ensure no one with cancer has to face the fight alone,” he said.

This year the World's Biggest Coffee Morning will celebrate its 25th Birthday, on Friday 25 September. M&S will stay on as the event’s corporate sponsor for a fifth year.
