The London Marathon could be held over two days next year, if organisers are granted permission.

A spokesperson for London Marathon Events (LME) said it was working with partners and stakeholders on the proposal but that no approval had yet been given.

The Guardian reported earlier this week that the 2027 event could be staged on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 April next year, if the plans are approved.

Some 56,640 finishers collectively raised £87.3m for charities in last year’s marathon – both of which were world record numbers.

A total of 1,133,813 people – another world record – entered the public ballot for this year’s marathon, which will take place on 26 April.

Participant numbers could almost double if the event is extended next year to around 100,000 over the weekend, potentially raising more than £130m for charities, the Guardian reported.

LME works with about 2,000 charities each year to deliver the event, offering places through a bond scheme and its annual Charity Ballot.

On the potential for more places over a two-day event, LME’s spokesperson said. “If permission is granted, we will be in touch with charities with more information.”

A Mayor of London spokesperson told the Guardian: “London is the sporting capital of the world and the mayor looks forward to working with London Marathon and partners to consider if it might be possible to host an event that will run across two days next year.”
