01 May 2025 News

TCS London Marathon

Sunday’s London Marathon has broken the world record for the largest annual one-day fundraising event, having already raised more than £75m for charities.

The total has beaten the existing world record of £73.5m, set at last year’s marathon, with the final total due to be announced in September.

Enthuse, the official online fundraising platform of the marathon, has announced £34m has been raised so far through its website, up from £30m last year, while £41m has been donated via JustGiving.

Meanwhile, end-of-life charity Marie Curie was yesterday announced as the official charity partner of next year’s marathon.

The 2025 edition’s charity of the year, Pancreatic Cancer UK, has reported that it has “already surpassed” its £2m target, with the figure still rising.

Hugh Brasher, chief executive of London Marathon Events, said: “The 2025 TCS London Marathon broke many records over the weekend, and this fantastic news means that we have already exceeded our own world record of £73.5m from 2024 as the world’s biggest one-day annual fundraising event.

“That is a wonderful achievement and huge thanks to every single person who fundraised and to all those who donated to a huge array of charitable causes.”

Since the first London Marathon in 1981, the event has raised more than £1.3bn for charities.

Marie Curie announced as 2026 charity of the year

Marie Curie said that it is aiming to raise £2m and recruit 1,300 people to run for the charity at next year’s marathon, due to be held on 26 April 2026.

The charity’s chief medical officer Sarah Holmes said: "We’re incredibly proud and very excited to be the 2026 TCS London Marathon charity of the year.

“The funds and awareness raised from the partnership will help us spotlight Marie Curie’s expertise in end-of-life care and shine a light on the profound impact that specialist care and support can have on those facing any terminal illness.”

Applications remain open for the marathon’s 2027 charity of the year and are set to close on 12 May.
