Richard Newton, new Fundraising Regulator board member for Wales

The Fundraising Regulator has today announced the appointment of Richard Newton as its new board member for Wales.

The fundraising watchdog has today announced that Richard Newton has been appointed as the regulator’s board member for Wales. Newton has over 25 years of fundraising experience, and the regulator said he brings “an in-depth understanding of the Welsh fundraising sector, as its political and regulatory environments”.

Newton founded his own, Cardiff-based fundraising consultancy – Richard Newton Consulting – in 2011. Prior to moving into consultancy, Newton was the Welsh director for Rathbone. He was also head of commercial for The Prince’s Trust, and had also worked for Barnardo’s and Marie Curie.

Newton is currently a trustee of the Sherman Theatre and Creu Cymru, a development agency for performance venues and arts centres in Wales. He was also volunteer chair of Cardiff Wales LGBT Mardi Gras.

Newton is the Fundraising Regulator's first representative for Wales.

Speaking on his appointment, Newton said: “Joining the Fundraising Regulator is incredibly exciting. I share the board’s commitment to protecting donors and strengthening external confidence in the sector and look forward to working with charities and associated organisations to help achieve this.”

Lord Michael Grade, interim chair of the Fundraising Regulator, said: “Wales’ fundraising sector is dynamic and complex. It operates in a local, national and European political context and has a broad and diverse range of stakeholders.

"Richard’s understanding of this environment is highly impressive and his appointment will greatly help the Regulator’s Welsh operations, as well as its wider work.”

Ceri Edwards, director of policy and communications at the Institute of Fundraising, said: “We welcome the appointment of Richard Newton to the Board of the Fundraising Regulator. He has an impressive track record as a fundraiser will bring a particularly strong understanding of the Welsh charitable sector to the Regulator’s work.”
