Esmée Fairbairn has launched a new £10m fund for charities working with young people leaving care, with the grantmaker taking a more targeted and “evidence-based” approach to funding.

The five-year programme, Young People Leaving Care, aims to invest £2m per year in projects that support young people leaving care to make the transition to adult hood.

It was informed by Esmée’s collaboration with Social Finance’s Social Impact Incubator.

Caroline Mason, chief executive of Esmée, said: “Our new approach to funding work with young people leaving care will take an evidence-based approach to see how, and where, we can increase the impact of our grants and build on what other funders and agencies are achieving.

“We’ve always been committed to funding organisations that help prepare young people to leave care. This new approach is deliberately based on evidence of the challenges faced by those young people. It means we can now focus our support on outcomes that matter most.”

Esmée said it expects most support to be made in the form of grants but will consider social investments as well. There is no limit on the size of grant and guidance for applications can be found on the charity’s website.
