The Human Dignity Trust’s appeal against a Charity Commission ruling that it is too political to be a charity is likely to be heard before the Charity Tribunal in June, a recent directions document indicates.
The Human Dignity Trust campaigns against the criminalisation of homosexuality in foreign countries by challenging the law in court where it feels it is unconstitutional.
The Commission ruled in October last year that the Trust's main objective was political, not charitable. The Trust appealed to the Tribunal in November, with the support of several human rights charities.
In directions published last week, the Tribunal said it would rule on 1 April whether two other organisations, Justice and the Redress Trust, would be permitted to intervene in the case.
It said both sides should notify it of dates unsuitable for a two-day hearing which would be held in June unless either side successfully appealed to the Upper Tribunal, in which case the Upper Tribunal would set its own hearing date.
