Charity Commission chair to appear before Public Accounts Committee

Charity Commisison chairman William Shawcross will appear before the Public Accounts Committee next week to discuss tax avoidance.

Charity Commisison chairman William Shawcross (pictured) will appear before the Public Accounts Committee next week to discuss tax avoidance.

He will appear alongside Richard Alderman, former director of the Serious Fraud Office and David Green the director of the Serious Fraud Office on Thursday 7 March at 9.45am.

The Charity Commission came under fire last month after it was revealed that it had investigated the Cup Trust but had allowed it to continue operating. The Commission responded by saying that no charity laws had been broken and that HMRC is responsible for tax issues.

Last week the committee published a report into tax avoidance schemes involving private individuals and companies. Margaret Hodge, chair or the PAC called on HMRC to “publically name and shame those who sell or use tax avoidance schemes”.

The charity was at the . Despite an income totalling more than £176m in its first two years it had distributed just £55,000 to charity in that time.
