Donating via cheque, tills and by electronic transfer are included in the Institute of Fundraising’s revised Handling of Cash Donations Code of Fundraising Practice.
The Institute is responding to both technological developments in the way people donate money to charity and also reaffirming its commitment to fighting the proposed abolition cheques in its revised version of the code, which will in future be known as the Handling of Cash and Other Financial Donations Code of Fundraising Practice.
The new code will also include provisions for allowing direct electronic transfers into charities’ bank accounts and also will require that if children are involved in the taking of cash for charity, both the child and the donation are protected.
Sarah Tirrell, policy and codes of practice manager at the Institute, said that the proposed changes are designed to ensure the body’s “guidance keeps in step with other practicalities of contemporary fundraising”.
The consultation is open until 3 May, 2011.
