Cancer Research UK has promised to share the results of its nationwide contactless collections trial for World Cancer Day with the wider charity sector.

Cancer Research UK has promised to share the results of its nationwide contactless collections trial for World Cancer Day with the wider charity sector.

As part of a new initiative to raise money for World Cancer Day, CRUK will launch contactless collection at 16 locations across the UK and has said it plans on “sharing learnings” from the trial to the wider sector.

According to a statement released today, CRUK has been working with a number of contactless payment companies including Payter, Creditcall, UK Cards Association and Elavon to “ensure that the trial is successful”.

CRUK has experimented with contactless collections in the past, having announced in January 2015 that it was debuting contactless giving “through shop windows” at four of its charity shops. This is the first time that CRUK or any charity has trialled contactless donations on a national scale. During the campaign period over 70,000 people "engaged" with the contactless windows.

CRUK would not disclose how much money was actually donated via the contactless windows as this is "commercially sensitive information".

People will be able to donate using contactless cards in 16 locations tomorrow across London, Glasgow, Liverpool and Leeds. Supporters are being encouraged to “donate £2”.

Ed Aspel, executive director of fundraising and marketing at Cancer Research UK, said: “It’s really exciting for us to be rolling out contactless giving across the UK on this scale. We’re committed to exploring new, innovative ways to fundraise and accept supporter donations. With the increasing use of contactless right now, this seems a natural next step.

“We’ve been at the forefront of contactless giving in the third sector, having launched a small scale pilot in four of our shop windows last year. But this activity takes it to a new level, will ensure we stay relevant, and make it as easy as possible for people to donate in a way that suits them.”

Breast Cancer Care, Anthony Nolan and the Movember Foundation are all working with CRUK as charity partners for World Cancer Day on 4 February.
