A campaign has been launched to bring a charity shop to the high street of British soap opera Coronation Street.

The movement follows the introduction of both a Costa Coffee and Co-op shop to the show which has been running since 1960, and has an average 8 million viewers per episode on ITV.

Jayne Cartwirght, founder of the Charity Retail Consultancy, started a Twitter poll asked if it is time for a charity shop on the longest-running soap on British television, which has so far attracted 336 votes, with 90 per cent voting yes.

According to the Coronation Street Blog, a fan website written about the show, there was previously a charity shop on the street which opened for six months in 1991. It was run by the Friends of Weathefield Hospital, and was eventually relocated within Weatherfield General.Charities including Cancer Research UK have made a bid to be the charity to run the shop on the show.

Civil Society Media publishes an annual survey of charity shops, sponsored by the Charity Retail Association. The main findings are available here.
