British Tinnitus Association changes name after 44 years

The British Tinnitus Association has changed its name after 44 years in an effort to reach more people.

It began as the British Tinnitus Association in 1979, but has now shortened its name to Tinnitus UK and aims to make it more visible and raise awareness of the condition.

Tinnitus UK unveiled its new name, website and chatbot today, alongside a refreshed visual identity that features bright colours and a soundwave graphic.

‘Will help us reach more people’

Deanne Thomas, chief executive of Tinnitus UK, said: “Now we are Tinnitus UK. This new name puts tinnitus first, because taking on tinnitus is the main reason we’re here, and we want everyone to know that. Becoming Tinnitus UK will help us reach more people with tinnitus, be more visible and raise more awareness of this condition which can have a significant impact on people’s quality of life.”

A spokesperson from Tinnitus UK, which had an income of £1.4m in its latest reported financial year, said much of the rebrand was conducted in-house to keep the costs down.

However, it did receive a grant for the new website and the development of the chatbot. The chatbot is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to guide people with tinnitus to relevant resources when they visit the Tinnitus UK website or require assistance.

Thomas added: “The chatbot means that we can help people no matter what time of day it is – as we know tinnitus can spike at night. Our website integrates with our new CRM (client relationship management) system, which will help us to connect with more people with tinnitus than ever before.”

Currently, one in seven adults in the UK lives with tinnitus, a condition where one hears sounds such as ringing that do not come from the outside world.
